Getting started
What does a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) do?+−
SLPs assess, diagnose, and treat communication challenges including speech sounds, language delays, fluency (stuttering), social communication, voice, literacy, and feeding. We work with children and families to support strong, functional communication skills. Meet our SLPs →
What does a Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) do?+−
A CDA delivers therapy sessions under the supervision and clinical direction of an SLP. The SLP completes the assessment, sets goals, and regularly reviews progress.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?+−
No. Families can book directly with Speech Haven. Some insurance plans may require a physician referral for reimbursement, so check your plan.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?+−
If you notice difficulty with speech clarity, understanding directions, expressing ideas, social communication, stuttering, or reading and writing skills, an assessment is recommended. Early support leads to better long-term outcomes. Browse services by need →
02
Assessments
What happens during an assessment?+−
The SLP gathers information about your child's development, reviews your concerns, observes play or conversation, and uses standardized and informal tools to identify strengths and areas of need. After the assessment, you will receive a summary highlighting next steps and goals. For a detailed report, an additional fee may apply.
How long does an assessment take?+−
Typically 60 to 90 minutes depending on the child's needs.
Do I receive a written report?+−
Yes. A detailed written report can be generated on request. It includes assessment results, goal areas, and recommendations. Reach out for details.
03
Therapy sessions
What does a therapy session look like?+−
Sessions are play-based, engaging, and tailored to your child's interests. Strategies may include games, visuals, modelling, repetition, literacy tasks, or structured practice depending on the goals.
How long are sessions?+−
Sessions may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on age, attention, and goals.
How often should my child attend?+−
Frequency varies. Many families begin with weekly sessions, but bi-weekly or monthly check-ins may also be appropriate. Your SLP will recommend a schedule that best supports progress.
Will I be involved in sessions?+−
Parent involvement is highly encouraged. Families may observe sessions, join activities, or receive home strategies to help carry over skills between appointments.
How long will my child need therapy?+−
Duration depends on the type of difficulty, consistency of practice, attendance, and the child's rate of learning. Your SLP will update you regularly on progress.
04
Home practice and parent coaching
Why is home practice important?+−
Children make the most progress when therapy strategies are used consistently at home. A few minutes of daily practice is often more effective than one weekly session alone.
Will I receive activities to use at home?+−
Yes. Your clinician will provide simple, practical strategies or worksheets to support carryover.
05
Virtual therapy
Does virtual speech therapy work?+−
Yes. Research shows online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for many goals. Children often enjoy the interactive online tools. Does virtual speech therapy work? →
What do I need for a virtual session?+−
A stable internet connection, a quiet space, and a device with a camera and microphone. A parent may need to support younger children on-screen.
